Keeping Tradition Alive

Ndebele art is a tradition that is held by females in South Africa. The art work is portrayed by painting the exterior of houses in colorful geometric patterns, as shown in the photograph.

Esther Mahlangu is an internationally recognized Ndebele artist. She is now in her 80's, draws freehand and was taught by her grandmother and mother. Over the course of her lifetime she has maintained and developed the traditional Ndebele art form . Her dedication and commitment is to promote and keep the heritage alive. She does this through her travels abroad, by exhibitions and commissioned works.

Collaboration with BMW

The car makers interest is not in just the innovation of its car brand but in an intercultural appreciation for the arts. This is through a number of cultural initiatives that they pursue, one of which is called, BMW Art Cars. The idea is to get international artists to design a car. Esther Mahlangu created a design in the 90's and has also worked on a recent venture with them.
