Crossing Africa's Coastline
Ian Packham who is from England likes to take on a challenge and travel allows him to do that. One of the reasons in his words is that it "challenges my preconceptions of the world."
The adventure begins with the thought of circumnavigating Africa by public transport following the coastline. The journey which took place in 2011-2012, begins in the Northwest corner of the continent in Tangier Morocc0 and returns to the same location, after thirteen months.
The opening of each chapter in the book begins with excerpts from authors, explorers and well known people like Bob Geldof, Paul Theroux, and James Bruce. The writing is Interspersed with some historical background and context of the countries visited.
His experience recounts being in the mix of the daily hustle and bustle of life in Africa. His mode of transport includes taking a ferry, taxi, train, minibus, the back of trucks; whatever means he could find to reach the next destination. There are good times and some frustrating moments like, finding transportation and being tossed in the back of vehicles, getting the necessary paperwork, and feeling exhausted; all part of the experience and reality of the trip.
An achievement in accomplishing what he set out to do.
