The African penguin population has declined over the years and is growing closer to being extinct. The nesting habitats and ability to reproduce have been hampered and nests have been sold by humans for fertilizer use. In addition, the ecosystem that they live in has altered because of changes in the weather system, resulting in rising sea temperatures and depletion of fish for the diet.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums have started a project to save the penguins on Kickstarter. The invest in the nest idea, is to build artificial nests made from environmentally friendly materials conducive for the penguins to breed in.
