The emergence and popularity of Airbnb have shaken up the accommodation marketplace. It has enabled and opened up access for many to participate in the home-sharing market across the globe. Africa has and is benefitting from this disruption; it's seen an increase in bookings, a better economic climate for locals, and different experiences for tourists.
A recent report published by Airbnb on the usage of its platform in Africa shows that it's not just foreign travelers that are using the site but a good proportion is within the continent.
Some numbers from the report:
*2012-2017, 2 million guests
*There are 100,000 listings
*2016-2017, 1.2 million guests
*29% come from within Africa
*46% are from Europe
*15% North America
*56% have beenĀ millennial travelers from 2016-2017
Airbnb has created opportunities, enabled more options both in price and choice of accommodation to the marketplace.
