For Travel
This book is about Geoffrey Kent and how he started his travel company Abercrombie & Kent. A journey that begins in Kenya but goes beyond Africa. The adventure takes him to many places as he builds on something that he developed out of necessity, ultimately becoming his passion.
Growing up in Africa, he learned to know and love the country. To see more of the continent during his teenage years, he took a trip on a motorbike from Nairobi to Cape Town (about 3,000 miles). Seeing Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance, spurred him to one day climb the mountain. This adventure was just the beginning of his pursuit and passion for travel and this journey as he puts it, "something about the long road opens my mind to a much wider vision for my life." As the book unfolds you'll find that his life and the road that he takes opens a grand vision for travel.
Along the way, he faced some challenging experiences and encountered plenty of bumps on the road. He accomplishes climbing Mount Kilimanjaro more than once, which prepares him for joining the army. After training in England and returning to Kenya, he sets up a safari company. His father's love and knowledge of the continent became the driving force for the path that he would take. A quote of the impact his father had on him he says, "his footprints across Africa became our roads."
The road which led him to start a luxury tented safari company became successful. The premise was to offer the best experience and service for the traveler. This included paying attention to detail in all aspects of the tours. Part of his ethos is working with the locals, giving back to the community by providing education and healthcare services, as well as protecting and conserving the environment. (In a 2014 PBS series called, In Pursuit of Passion, you can watch the video on YouTube which covers more of his philanthropic work). His company and journey don't just stop in Africa but cover many destinations.
Finding a new travel destination and seeing its potential has been the main drive, focus, and motivation. He has developed a reputable company built on quality, met and taken many people on his adventures including some who are famous. His pursuit and passion for travel, meeting the needs of the traveler by offering something different; it can be summed up by these words from the book, "they travel to learn about the world beyond their own experience."
