Keyhole Gardening: A Way To Grow Fruits & Vegetables

Keyhole gardening has become a method of growing nutritional food in several countries in Africa. It was introduced as a way of combating drought conditions and first implemented in Lesotho. It is a good way for families to be self-sufficient and also make extra income from surplus produce.

The garden shaped like a keyhole and often walled with stone or brick is good year round, and relatively low maintenance. The layering style of materials used in the bedding and household vegetable scraps added to the composting bin allows for retention of moisture and nutrient absorption.

This technique of growing vegetables and fruits is being adapted, and has become a more popular style of gardening.
