The Maasai Competing in Their Own Olympics

Sporting Traditional Warrior Skills

The Maasai  who are known for their dexterity especially for hunting lions, have now turned to a new form of hunting through sports. The Maasai Olympics is a relatively new event that takes place from the months of July through October, culminating with the finals in December.

This new approach is a combined effort between the Maasai of Amboseli/Tsavo along with partners that want to protect the lion population and also enable the Maasai to maintain their culture. Instead of hunting for lions they are able to demonstrate skills by competing in sports and attaining a trophy.

This is a great way to preserve the Maasai culture, conserve the lions and compete in an event with some economic benefits.
